When February rolls around, most of us in Indiana think automatically of Valentine’s Day. In other parts of the country, though, Mardi Gras is the most important holiday of the month. It’s the last celebration before we head into the final stretch of winter, a time of joy in the coldest part of the year.
The term Mardi Gras tends to conjure images of purple, green, and gold beads being thrown from intricately decorated floats as they roll slowly through the French Quarter in New Orleans. Those floats would move a whole lot slower if it wasn’t for smoothly paved roads! Did you know that soybeans grown right here in Indiana are an important ingredient in the concrete sealant that is used on roads and bridges all over the country? Soy-based sealant offers greater protection from the elements than other sealant products, is safe to apply, and is biodegradable!
Soybeans are used for hundreds of products that impact our lives every day! They are in everything from the ink on your newspaper to toothpaste and even carpet backing! They are also in the wax used to make crayons and candles. Of course, we can’t forget that they are a major component in livestock feed, too.
